Winlock became the first incorporated city in Lewis County on February 28, 1883; originally known as Grand Prairie, it was named in honor of General Winlock W. Miller. With the Northern Pacific Railway running close to town, Winlock grew and it quickly became a bustling logging & lumbering town. When the lumbering trades declined, Finnish immigrants brought about the thriving poultry industry. In 1921 Winlock celebrated the first annual Poultry and Egg Day to commemorate the importance of this industry to the town. Egg Days are an event held every year in the month of June. To demonstrate the community’s pride, a big egg was fashioned from canvas by town boosters in 1923. A plastic version replaced it in 1944 and the first fiberglass version replaced it in the 1960’s. It is only fitting to make these little glass egg creations.
